PALIO OF SAN MARTINO 2023
REPORT ON THE XVII EDITION OF THE BORNO PALIO
The seventeenth edition of the medieval palio of San Martino in Borno, organised by the ‘6 Contrade’ association and the ‘Confraternita del Cervo’ in collaboration with various village associations, ended on Sunday, 16 July.
This year also saw the second ‘palio delli Borghi armati’, in which the municipalities of the middle Camonica Valley participated: Bienno (Bien), Borno (Buren), Breno (Bré), Niardo (Gnart), Malegno (Malegn), Ossimo (Osem), Lozio (Loh) and Piancogno (Pià e Cogn).
At the end of the competition, the villages of Malegn and Bré were provisionally tied at the top with 93 points. Next year this event will end with the official awarding of the palio after three years of competition.
The victory of the 17th San Martino palio went instead to the contrada of Nfont a Buren, which with a score of 95 points won its sixth trophy, beating the contrada of Paline by 10 points. It was followed by Nsima a Buren, Dasa, Quadela and Ciasa.
Great success of participation and public for this edition of the palio of S. Martino, which confirms itself as an essential moment of aggregation and sportsmanship for almost all the people of Borno and the numerous tourists who frequent the Altopiano.
The Palio of San Martino is intended to be a historical reconstruction of the games and atmospheres of the 12th and 13th centuries, with games from those times, such as the “pallacorda”, the “corsa del formaggio”, the “tir del borel”, the “trabucco” and others, involving more than 250 “champions” large and small from all over the village.
The appointment is for next year, again in mid-July, for a new and if possible even richer and more participatory edition.
