PALIO OF SAN MARTINO 2024
REPORT ON THE XVIII EDITION OF THE BORNO PALIO
The eighteenth edition of the Medieval palio of San Martino in Borno, organised by the ‘6 Contrade’ association and the ‘Confraternita del Cervo’ in collaboration with various village associations, came to an end on Sunday, 21 July.
This year was also the third year of the second ‘palio delli Borghi armati’, in which the municipalities of the middle Camonica Valley participated: Bienno (Bien), Borno (Buren), Breno (Bré), Niardo (Gnart), Malegno (Malegn), Ossimo (Osem), Lozio (Loh) and Piancogno (Pià e Cogn). At the end of the competition, the borough of Malegn won the 2nd Palio delli Borghi Armati. The hamlet of Bré won the style prize, awarded by the Confraternity.
The victory of the 18th San Martino Palio went instead to the contrada of Nsima in Buren, which with a score of 88 points won its second trophy after thirteen years since its last victory in 2012, on an equal footing with the contrada of Nfont in Buren but surpassing it in the number of victories in the individual games. It was followed by Ciasa, Paline, Quadela and Dasa. The contrade style prize went to the Ciasa.
This year’s edition of Borno Palio, an essential moment of aggregation and sportsmanship for almost all the people of Borno and the many tourists who frequent the plateau, was also a great success with a special dedication to those who have always supported the palio and recently left us.
The Palio of San Martino is intended to be a historical reconstruction of the games and atmospheres of the 12th and 13th centuries, with games from those times, such as the “pallacorda”, the “corsa del formaggio”, the “tir del borel”, the “trabucco” and others, involving more than 250 “champions” large and small from all over the village.
The appointment is for next year, again in mid-July, for a new and if possible even richer and more participatory edition.
