100. Borno m. 900 – Freal – Avendrino – Malga Zumella – San Fermo refuge m. 1868 1868
Route characteristics
Mostly on wide mule tracks through the woods, then a path on pastures. Quite steep and tiring sections. Vast views.
Description
From Piazza Umberto I go up Via San Fermo, where (see arrows) you turn left into Via Duregno and continue along Via Freal. The road climbs steeply in the middle of the meadows, then flattens out briefly passing between two farmhouses and starts climbing again in a forest of spruce, hazel and beech. Continue on a stony mule track until you turn left to cross the Caidone stream. Continue diagonally and after a short slight slope, the route makes a wide curve to the right, bypassing a pasture.
Here, in the locality of Avendrino where there are some beautiful cottages, stop to admire the panoramas. A beautiful carved wood fountain directs the path to the left, to overcome a steep slope that leads to Malga Zumella m. 1565 (1:45 hrs). Go up the pasture behind the Malga, enter the wood which, after a few hairpin bends, gives way to grass, which characterizes the final stretch of the route.
It goes past the Malga di San Fermo and connects with the road that leads to the San Fermo refuge m. 1868 (2:30 hrs). From the top, a wonderful panorama of mountains and alpine valleys.
