Church of San Carlo
per person
The little church of San Carlo was built at the behest of the community, in memory of Cardinal Carlo Borromeo’s visit to Ossimo in 1580, as a sign of great devotion.
The building, on a raised site overlooking the Valle Camonica, outside the town, began around 1614 and was completed four years later, but it was a difficult undertaking. In fact, in 1617 the land of Ossimo was interdicted and the construction of the church was suspended as early as October 1616, because the inhabitants wanted to administer the alms money without the intervention of the Rector.
In the small presbytery, there is a 17th century fresco by an unknown author, depicting Mary Magdalene and St. Mark at the bottom, and St. Charles in adoration before the Virgin and Child at the top. Having fallen into disuse and damaged due to neglect and water infiltration, the little church of San Carlo was restored in 1986 by the Gruppo Alpini of Ossimo Superiore, who saved it from ruin.
